The 49-year-old died on Sunday, June 23, 2024, as confirmed by Honolulu’s emergency services during a press conference.
Emergency services responded to Malaekahana Beach at around 1:00 PM local time. Perry, also a lifeguard, was brought to shore by jet ski but was pronounced dead by paramedics.
Perry played one of the buccaneers in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the franchise. He also appeared in Lost, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Crush, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, as well as a Coca-Cola commercial.

Born on the east side of Oahu, Perry had been a professional surfer for over a decade. He shared his experiences surfing “the world’s deadliest wave” on the Oahu Surfing Experience website, where he worked as an instructor.
He also mentioned a near-fatal accident he had a few years ago due to someone else’s “lack of awareness.”
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all” and noted his infectious personality. Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death “a tragic loss,” describing him as a legendary waterman and a respected member of the ocean safety team.
Both officials extended their condolences to Perry’s family and asked for privacy for them to grieve.
