Hendrie first realized he would work in radio when he was five years old and on a family trip to Toronto, Ontario. His passion for working in radio was sparked by the fact that his family traveled while listening to the radio.

He was the fourth child in a Catholic upper-middle-class family, and he served as an altar boy at Holy Angels Church in Arcadia.

As fate would have it, he came to prominence in the 1990s by hosting The Phil Hendrie Show, a radio talk show where he portrayed himself as a calm, rational host while simultaneously portraying any of several outrageous and offensive characters who would engage in debates with Hendrie and callers to the show.

Hendrie debuted on talk radio as a weekend host at KFI-AM 640.

In 1990, at KVEN-AM in Ventura, Calif., Hendrie introduced his first character, Bobbie Dooley, a conservative Southern California housewife.
