His family announced that he passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18 2024 after a long illness, surrounded by his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomas, his sister, children, grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie.

Donahue’s groundbreaking approach to television began in the late 1960s when he became the first talk show host to engage directly with his audience, a format that would influence future shows and hosts.

His nationally syndicated program, “The Phil Donahue Show,” later known simply as “Donahue,” became a ratings success and set the stage for other talk shows hosted by figures like Montel Williams and Jerry Springer.

Oprah Winfrey, reflecting on Donahue’s impact, described him as a trailblazer who “invented smart talk in the afternoon” and introduced challenging ideas to American viewers.

In recognition of his contributions, President Joe Biden awarded Donahue the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, earlier this year. The White House praised him as a “television pioneer.”

Marlo Thomas, in a heartfelt Instagram post, shared her gratitude for the support she and Donahue received over the years. She also expressed her intention to step away from social media to take care of herself during this difficult time, thanking followers for allowing them to share their life together.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.
