He made his MLB debut on April 8, 2017, against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field, giving up two runs in a third of an inning.  On April 13, he was optioned back to Las Vegas and recalled on May 1.

He spent the remainder of 2017 with the Mets after being recalled on May 1. He went 0-6 with a 4.55 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 57 relief appearances for New York.

On January 7, 2021, Sewald signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners organization. In 2021, Sewald went 10-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 62 games and 64.2 innings, striking out 104 batters.
