The 37-year-old tennis legend defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in a thrilling men’s singles final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Djokovic, already a holder of numerous Grand Slam titles and record weeks at No. 1, had been chasing this elusive Olympic gold for years.

His victory came in an evenly matched and tense final, with Djokovic showcasing his best performance when it mattered most.

The match was a display of high-level tennis, with both players demonstrating superb skill and resilience. Djokovic excelled in the tiebreakers, securing his victory against Alcaraz, who had beaten him in the Wimbledon final just three weeks prior.

This win adds to Djokovic’s extensive list of achievements, making him an Olympic champion. He expressed that this victory, coming after years of near-misses and intense competition, holds a special place in his career.

“When I take everything into consideration, this probably is the biggest sporting success I ever had in my career,” said Djokovic, who didn’t drop a set in Paris and is the oldest man to win the Summer Games tennis title since 1908.

“This kind of supersedes everything that I imagined, that I hoped that I could experience, that I could feel.”

Carlos Alcaraz, despite his loss, acknowledged Djokovic’s determination and performance. “In the close moments, in the difficult situations, in the tiebreaks, he played an impressive game,” said Alcaraz, who was aiming to become the youngest male singles gold medalist. “That’s why I saw that he’s hungry for the gold medal. He was going to go for it.”

Djokovic’s previous Olympic experiences included a bronze medal from 2008, but he had never reached the top of the podium until now. His journey to this gold medal was marked by numerous challenges and setbacks, making this victory all the more significant.

Reflecting on his victory, Djokovic shared his belief in his eventual success despite the doubts. “There are always doubts. Absolutely, I had doubts,” Djokovic said. “But the belief and the conviction that I can make, it is stronger than my doubts. It always has been. I knew that it’s going to happen. It was just a matter of when it’s going to happen.”
