This victory marks her fourth career gold medal and makes her only the third Australian woman after Dawn Fraser and Ariarne Titmus to successfully defend an individual Olympic title.

McKeown, 23, secured a dramatic come-from-behind win in the final. Her achievements place her in contention to become Australia’s most decorated Olympian, with a potential to surpass Emma McKeon’s record of six career gold medals.

In addition to the 100m backstroke, McKeown will compete in the 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley, and relay events this week.

McKeown’s achievement is notable as she joins the ranks of Australian swimmers with three individual Olympic golds, including Ian Thorpe, Dawn Fraser, Betty Cuthbert, Shane Gould, and Murray Rose.

The coming days will be crucial as McKeown competes in additional events, including the 4x100m mixed medley relay and the 4x100m women’s medley relay.
