The 20-year-old American was hoping for a strong showing but faced setbacks throughout the event.

On Tuesday, July 30th 2024, Gauff was defeated by Croatia’s Donna Vekic in the third round of the women’s singles, a loss that brought her to tears after a heated argument with the umpire over a call in the final set.

In the women’s doubles on Wednesday, July 31 2024, Gauff and her partner Jessica Pegula were narrowly beaten in the second round by the Czech pair Linda Nosková and Karolína Muchová in a tiebreak.

Gauff’s final Olympic match also ended in disappointment. She and her mixed doubles partner Taylor Fritz lost to the Canadian duo Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski in another tight tiebreak in the quarterfinals.

Despite the early exits, Gauff’s Olympic debut was memorable. She was one of two American flag bearers, alongside LeBron James, at the opening ceremony, marking a historic moment as the first American tennis player to earn that honor.

Gauff is expected to return to the Olympics for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, where she will aim for a more successful campaign.
