This victory continues to highlight her impressive comeback and ongoing ascent in the sport.

Marks’ future seemed uncertain in 2022 when she took a break from the World Surf League (WSL) due to recurring medical and mental health issues.

However, she made a remarkable return, winning the 2023 WSL Finals and now, an Olympic gold medal.

Competing in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, Marks capitalized early in the 35-minute final, edging out Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, who took silver, and France’s Johanne Defay, who claimed bronze.

With subdued surf conditions, Marks secured a critical barrel ride that scored 7.50 points, which ultimately made the difference.

In the final moments, Weston-Webb caught a wave and anxiously awaited the judges’ scores. Marks’ two-wave score of 10.50 narrowly surpassed Weston-Webb’s combined score of 10.33, leading to an emotional victory for the American surfer.

“I’m just really happy and just trying to soak everything in because it’s probably the best day in my life,” Marks said. “Once they announced (Weston-Webb) didn’t get enough, I just burst into tears. Just super emotional — your whole life goes into a moment like this, so it’s just really special.”

This win marks the second consecutive surfing gold for American women, following Carissa Moore’s victory at the 2021 Tokyo Games during the sport’s Olympic debut.
