Easter Sunday commemorates Jesus’ resurrection from death.

Many Christians celebrate Easter Sunday as the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, which is written in the New Testament of the Christian bible.

However, the roots of the Easter holiday’s traditions and activities can be traced back to pagan celebrations.

It is quite surprising to know that the name Easter is believed to come from Eostara, the goddess of rebirth.

In early times, the Feast of Eostara celebrated earth’s resurrection and rebirth.

Strict Puritans would have nothing to do with Easter – as they deemed it as a merely a human institution – in the past.

This means that all major supermarkets will not be open on Easter Sunday (April 17).

However, the stores exempted from the law above includes;

  1. Shops and metro supermarkets at service stations
  2. Registered pharmacies selling only medicinal products, medical and surgical appliances and
  3. Farm shops that sell primarily their own produce.

Also, supermarkets that have smaller stores under 280 square metres may also be open but with shorter opening hours than they usually have.

As such, the following mini stores are expected to be open;

  2. Lidl (Scotland only) – open as normal
