Renowned for his tenure as the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Nigeria, spanning from November 2015 until his resignation in 2022, Onu held the record for the longest service in this ministry.

His journey to prominence began at Izzi High School in Abakaliki, now Ebonyi State’s capital, where he excelled in his studies, earning top honors in the West African School Certificate Examination.

Continuing his academic pursuit, Onu emerged as the overall best student in the High School Examination at the College of Immaculate Conception (C.I.C) Enugu. He furthered his education at the University of Lagos, graduating with distinction in chemical engineering in 1976.

His quest for knowledge led him to the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemical engineering in 1980.

In addition to his academic achievements, Onu delved into politics, vying for the presidential ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2023 general election, though ultimately losing to President Bola Tinubu.

Throughout his life, Onu wore many hats – a politician, author, and engineer. He leaves behind a legacy survived by his children and other loved ones.
