North East: One Person Killed in Renewed Chieftaincy and Land Dispute

In a tragic escalation of longstanding tensions, Gbingbani, located in the North East Region of Ghana, has witnessed deadly violence stemming from unresolved chieftaincy and land disputes between two Konkomba factions.

Reports indicate that one person has been killed, and over ten houses have been damaged as a result of the conflict.

Konlan Bitian, the District Chief Executive, confirmed the incident, detailing that the clashes erupted late on Friday, June 28 2024 night when unidentified armed individuals launched an assault.

Following the violence, these assailants reportedly fled the area, leaving behind vulnerable residents, mostly women and children.

In response to the escalating situation, law enforcement agencies have been deployed to the region.

However, concerns remain high as there are emerging reports of armed groups from Jejung, a village in Chereponi, allegedly planning further attacks on Gbingbani.

The underlying causes of the renewed hostilities remain unclear, but local authorities have initiated investigations to uncover the root of the conflict. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
