The state assembly in Kaduna, in north-western Nigeria, have approved full surgical castration as punishment for men who will be convicted of rape.
This news has brought joy to many women, feminists and activists in Nigeria, including state commissioner for woman’s affairs and social development, Hafsat Baba.
She described the approval by the state assembly as a “welcome development”, saying that, it will serve as “deterrent” for rapists.
The bill, will now have to be signed buy state governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, in order for it to become a law.
In June Nigerian governors declared a state of emergency over rape and violence against women and children in the country.
