Nigel Lawson, also known as Lord Lawson of Blaby, was a well-known British politician and journalist who contributed significantly to the Conservative Party throughout his tenure in parliament.

He was born on March 11th, 1932, in Hampstead, London, into a non-Orthodox Jewish family, with a father who owned a tea trading concern and a mother from a rich stockbroker family.

Lawson was elected to Parliament in 1974 as the Blaby constituency representative, a position he held for 18 years until 1992.

He joined Margaret Thatcher’s cabinet in 1981 as Secretary of State for Energy, serving in that capacity until 1983, when he was elevated to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer.

As Chancellor, Lawson was instrumental in the Thatcher administration’s decision to privatize British Airways, British Telecom, and British Gas, among other important sectors.

Lawson prepared for an impending full-scale coal sector strike while serving as secretary of state for energy. Also, he created the groundwork for the later privatization of the gas and electricity industries by laying the platform for their privatization.

Gustav Leibson, Nigel’s grandpa on his father’s side, was a merchant from Mitau, which is now known as Jelgava in Latvia. Gustav became a British citizen in 1911, and in 1925, he changed his name from Leibson to Lawson.
