This sale of Elliot Anderson was crucial for Newcastle United to comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules before the financial accounting period ended on June 30.

Elliot Anderson, a product of Newcastle’s academy, joins Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest after making 55 first-team appearances for Newcastle, including 44 in the Premier League.

Despite his reluctance to leave his boyhood club, the attractive personal terms and the opportunity to join an established Premier League team convinced Anderson to make the move.

Newcastle’s need to bridge the PSR gap left them with no choice but to sell Anderson, even though manager Eddie Howe greatly valued the 21-year-old midfielder.

The decision was seen as necessary to avoid potential penalties, such as a points deduction, in a season where Newcastle aims to compete fiercely.

Newcastle will kick off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign by hosting newly promoted Southampton on Saturday, August 17.
