Organized Labour is set to begin a nationwide strike today in response to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) attempt to sell its 60% stake in four hotels.

SSNIT announced on Friday, July 12 2024 that it had canceled the sale to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, following threats of a strike from Organized Labour. Rock City Hotel had also withdrawn its bid for the purchase.
Despite the cancellation, Organized Labour remains determined to proceed with the strike. Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, National Secretary of UTAG, expressed frustration over what he views as a breach of trust by SSNIT.

He claimed SSNIT ignored their warnings and concerns even after the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) initially intervened to halt the transaction.
“When Organized Labour issued an ultimatum, NPRA intervened and the transaction was put on hold. However, despite these assurances, NPRA later approved the deal, and now SSNIT has announced the termination of the sale,” Dr. Mumuni told Citi FM.
He added, “This breach of trust is why we are continuing with the strike. We believe it is necessary to examine the SSNIT board structure and consider replacing the current members to ensure accountability.”
