Michael Whitaker Smith is an American musician well known for his contemporary Christian music. Michael Whitaker was born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia. Michael W. Smith’s father, Paul Smith, was an oil refinery worker at the Ashland Oil Refinery whiles his mother, Barbara Smith, was a caterer.

Michael W. Smith at age 5 wrote his first song before eventually becoming a devout Christian at age 10. Michael W. Smith was often with a group of strong Christian friends to build on his faith until he left for college where he met a different group of friends and began experimenting with alcohol, drugs, and partying.

Michael W. Smith to return to his Christian faith had to return to Nashville in 1978 upon the advice of Shane Keister, his friend.
