Following her graduation from Yale, Sarah embarked on a career that would see her make her mark as both an author and a filmmaker. In 2011, she published her first book, “The Central Park Five: A Chronicle of a City Wilding.” The book, which examines the infamous case of five Black and Latino teenagers wrongfully convicted of a brutal assault in Central Park in 1989, received widespread acclaim for its meticulous research and compelling narrative.

Sarah’s work shed new light on the case, exposing the flaws in the criminal justice system and the pervasive racism that continues to plague society. Her book served as the basis for a documentary film of the same name, co-directed by Sarah, her father Ken Burns, and her husband David McMahon. The film further amplified the voices of the Central Park Five and sparked a national conversation about race, justice, and accountability.

In addition to her work on “The Central Park Five,” Sarah Burns has also collaborated with her father on other documentary projects, including “The Central Park Five,” “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History,” and “Jackie Robinson.” Through her filmmaking, she has continued to explore themes of social justice, civil rights, and the human experience, shining a spotlight on stories that deserve to be heard.
