The decision was confirmed by ESPN on Thursday, August 15 2024.

Pochettino, 52, who was recently out of work after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent following a single season at Stamford Bridge, will succeed Gregg Berhalter.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager agreed to the position after extensive discussions with Matt Crocker, the USSF technical director.

Crocker, who previously worked with Southampton and the English Football Association, was tasked with finding a world-class coach to prepare the USMNT for a competitive showing at the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Efforts to bring Jürgen Klopp on board after his departure from Liverpool did not materialize, but Pochettino’s agreement represents a significant achievement for the USSF.

Pochettino is anticipated to take charge in time for the USMNT’s match against Canada in Kansas City on September 7 2024. He was also considered a potential candidate for the England manager role following Gareth Southgate’s tenure.
