Born on May 29, 1955, in Elmhurst, Illinois, Mars Williams was introduced to the world of music through his father, a trumpet player who exposed him to the sounds of big band and dixieland jazz.

Initially a classical clarinetist, Williams transitioned to the saxophone during his last year of high school, drawing inspiration from jazz legends like Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker.

His formal education in music continued at De Paul University and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, studying under visionary founders Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell.

Career Highlights

Mars Williams distinguished himself as a versatile musician, orchestrator, and arranger. His career took a significant turn when he joined The Waitresses and later The Psychedelic Furs, leaving an indelible mark on the alternative and punk rock scenes.

Williams’ notable achievements include a pivotal tour with The Psychedelic Furs in Australia in 1983, stepping in for sax-player Gary Windo. Following a successful tour and the disbandment of The Waitresses, Williams was invited to stay on as a permanent member of The Psychedelic Furs, a role he embraced until 1989.

He later rejoined the band in 2005, reaffirming his status as an integral part of their sound.

Ampullary Cancer and Passing

Tragically, Mars Williams battled ampullary cancer, a rare and aggressive form affecting the digestive system, before succumbing to the illness on November 20, 2023. The music community and fans alike mourn the loss of a remarkable talent whose contributions continue to resonate.
