Mark Stone Van Halen

Mark is forever remembered as the original bassist of revolutionary hard rock band, Van Halen. At a young age, he played a series of local backyard gigs together with the Van Halen brothers, Alex and Eddie, and called themselves Genesis. Their three-member band was renamed Mammoth with Eddie on vocals and guitar, Alex on drums and Mark on bass guitar. After the arrival of David Lee Roth in 1974, Mammoth birthed the legendary rock band, Van Halen. Mark’s stay at Van Halen was short-lived and had no official records with the band. However, he featured in the group’s early demos notably, Angel Eyes, Believe Me, Gentleman of Leisure and Glitter. As a result of his conflicting career and academics, Mark eventually left the band in1974 in order to focus on his education which was his topmost priority. That same year, he was replaced on bass guitar by Michael Anthony. Even after his departure, Mark maintained a good bond with his former band mates and was involved in their 2003 documentary, The Van Halen Story: The Early Years.
