As a sophomore, he put up 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks per game on average. After leading Bishop Miege to the Kansas Class 4A state championship, Mitchell averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game, earning him the DiRenna Award as the best player in the Kansas City region.

At Duke, Mitchell was a starter at forward going into his first year. He shot 46.9% from the floor in his rookie season, starting 35 games and averaging 9.1 points and 4.5 rebounds.
