Mexico City is where José Mario Molina-Pasqual Henriquez was born and nurtured. Mario was always interested in the scientific sciences.

As he came across his first microscope, he was overjoyed to see the creatures that were present in a drop of common pond water.
When Mario grew older, his father, a well-known lawyer, would represent his country as ambassador to the Philippines, Australia, and Ethiopia.

Young Mario bought chemistry equipment and set up his own lab in the family’s unoccupied bathroom.

Molina enrolled in the University of California, Berkeley’s physical chemistry Ph.D. program in 1968.
He joined a research team led by Professor George Pimentel there, where he deepened his understanding of physics, mathematics, and physical chemistry. He would later regard Pimentel as having had a significant impact on his growth as a scientist.
