Sainani Nkhoma shared a video of an animated figure with Chakwera’s face dancing humorously, along with offensive comments about the president in a WhatsApp group.
The judge, Talakwanji Mndala, deemed Nkhoma’s actions inappropriate and warned that he could face a fine of about $3,500 or up to six years in prison.
This incident unfolded when members of the WhatsApp group in Mponela reported Nkhoma to the ruling Malawi Congress Party. Authorities promptly arrested Nkhoma on Tuesday night.

President Chakwera came to power in 2020 after a court-ordered re-run of the 2019 election due to irregularities. This case highlights the ongoing struggle in Malawi between freedom of expression and respecting authority, sparking debates on the boundaries of digital speech.
This isn’t the first time such issues have arisen. In May 2022, a nurse was arrested for criticizing President Chakwera during a WhatsApp discussion. The police defended the arrest, citing the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act 2016.
These incidents have drawn global attention, shedding light on the tension between governmental power and individual liberties in Malawi.
