Actress Lydia Forson has openly questioned the rationale behind the government’s decision to reintroduce road tolls while maintaining the e-levy.

Forson highlighted the initial removal of road tolls and the introduction of the e-levy as a strategy to generate sufficient revenue, with the argument that this would prevent Ghana from needing to resort to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

She expressed her confusion and dissatisfaction with the government’s sudden reversal, questioning why the e-levy remains in place even as road tolls are being reintroduced.

In her statement, Forson said, “You take away road tolls that no one was complaining about, replaced them with #elevy that the people didn’t want; and now you want to bring back road tolls and still keep the e-levy?”

Her concerns echo those of Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson, who, while speaking in Parliament, criticized the government’s missed opportunity to eliminate what he termed “nuisance taxes.” He argued that scrapping these taxes would have been a popular move among Ghanaians and could have garnered support for the government.

The debate continues as many Ghanaians await a clear explanation for this policy shift.
