Luther Kent, a Louisiana blues legend and former lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears, passed away early Friday, August 16 2024 morning at his home in Livingston Parish. He was 76.

A powerhouse vocalist inspired by the blues, soul, and classic rhythm-and-blues of his native New Orleans, Kent had a career that spanned over six decades.
Despite battling heart disease, he continued to perform until early this summer, including his 44th appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
Kent began his singing career in his early teens and quickly became a prominent figure on Louisiana stages and beyond.

Known for his soulful and powerful voice, he was highly regarded in the music community. “He’s one of the greatest,” said Baton Rouge producer and promoter Johnny Palazzotto. “He had so much soul and feeling in his voice.”
Throughout his career, Kent performed with various bands, including his longtime group, Trick Bag, and as a duo with guitarist Chris LeBlanc in recent years. He also had a brief stint as the lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears in the mid-1970s.
Kent’s influence extended beyond his performances. He recorded with several Baton Rouge music producers, including Cyril Vetter, who remarked, “A great loss to the music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. His presence and larger-than-life personality will be missed.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
