Ontiveros previously estimated that she had played a maid at least 150 times on stage and in cinema; she wanted to see more diversified roles for Latina performers, stating, “I’m pleased to represent those hands who labor in this country.
Every maid I’ve ever depicted has had soul and heart.”She was chosen as the narrator for the documentary Maid in America in part due to her previous experience in this job.
