Trey Holtz, son of Skip Holtz and grandson of Lou Holtz, is a coach on the Ohio State Buckeyes football team.
Chad Fitzgerald Holtz, grandson of Lou Holtz, is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and works as a financial advisor.
Hailey Elizabeth Holtz, granddaughter of Lou Holtz, is a student.

Holtz is very close to his grandchildren and enjoys spending time with them. He has said that they are a great source of joy in his life.

Holtz was born on January 6, 1937, in Follansbee, West Virginia, and is primarily recognized for his career as a football coach and his contributions to the sport, as well as his later work as a sports analyst and motivational speaker.

He served as the head football coach at the College of William & Mary (1969–1971), North Carolina State University (1972–1975), the New York Jets (1976), the University of Arkansas (1977–1983), the University of Minnesota (1984–1985), the University of Notre Dame (1986–1996), and the University of South Carolina (1999–2004), compiling a career college football head coaching record of 249–132–7. Holtz’s 1988 Notre Dame team went 12–0 with a victory in the Fiesta Bowl and was the consensus national champion.

Holtz is considered to be one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. He is the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 20 rankings. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Holtz was known for his fiery personality, his motivational speeches, and his commitment to excellence. He was also a master of defense and special teams. He demanded a lot from his players, but he also cared about them deeply and was always willing to help them succeed.
