The Mets took two out of three from the Marlins over the weekend at Citi Field to work their way up the NL East standings. The big story on the latest “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and Nelson Figueroa is the rookie, Andres Gimenez.
Figgie and I open the show talking about Gimenez’s big day Sunday and the impact he has made so quickly on the team. He needs to be in the lineup every day and when Robinson Cano returns, Gimenez needs to be at second base with Cano taking the DH spot. Figgie gives me good analysis on Gimenez after talking with a coach in the organization about him coming up in the minor leagues. We also talk about Jacob deGrom’s impact as he continues to lead the Mets to wins, despite dealing with a “hot spot” on his finger Sunday. We talk about the series win, the lineup, the bullpen pitching well and the team playing better since Yoenis Cespedes left.
NY Post Mets beat writer Mike Puma then drops by the podcast. Puma talks Gimenez, deGrom’s finger, Michael Wacha headed to the 10-day IL and how the bullpen is shaking out. Will it be a bullpen game on Wednesday to replace him? When might Marcus Stroman come back? When will Brad Brach be back? There’s a lot of pitching injury news to discuss as the Mets try to get closer to full strength, with Jared Hughes pitching effectively and Robert Gsellman making his debut on Saturday.
Former Mets outfielder and fan favorite Endy Chavez then joins the show. Chavez tells us exactly what happened as he made “The Catch” in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, robbing Scott Rolen of a two-run home run that would have given the Cardinals the lead. He talks about coaching in the minor leagues, including coaching Gimenez and watching Cespedes work hard before the season to return and being surprised by his opt-out. Chavez also talks about memories from that memorable 2006 Mets team, when he had the best season of his career — which many people seem to forget about. He had career-highs in batting average (.306) and on-base percentage (.348).
