They have started the qualifiers impressively, earning seven points from three games. On Thursday, they secured a crucial 2-0 win against Mauritania in Nouakchott, taking control of their group, which also includes Senegal.

This victory gives Sudan a total of seven points, putting them two points ahead of former African champions Senegal, who drew 1-1 with DR Congo in Diamniadio.

Sudan’s journey began with a draw against Togo, followed by a win over DR Congo, and then their recent triumph over Mauritania. This strong start provides them an early advantage in their World Cup quest.

Kwesi Appiah, appointed in September 2023, has made a significant impact on the Sudanese team, assisted by his fellow Ghanaian, Ignatius Osei-Fosu. Before Appiah’s arrival, Sudan had not won a match since March 2023.

However, he broke this streak with a win over Chad, and since then, Sudan has won three of their last five games. This success has inspired belief that something remarkable is achievable, despite the long journey ahead.

Sudan’s next match is against South Sudan in Juba, where they will be favourites. This game offers another chance for Sudan to maintain their consistency and keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Sudan has never qualified for the World Cup, but Kwesi Appiah, who led Ghana to the World Cup in 2014, could make history again.

Sudanese fans are hopeful that this could be the year their team achieves something extraordinary on the international stage.
