The director’s vision for ‘Aníkúlápó’ extends beyond a standalone film, as he initially conceived it as a series to delve deeper into the intricate lives of its characters, Saro (played by Kunle Remi) and Arolake (portrayed by Bimbo Ademoye). From exploring themes of gender dynamics to depicting the complexities of the Old Oyo Empire, Afolayan aimed to offer audiences a multifaceted narrative that resonates with authenticity.

Reflecting on the genesis of the project, Afolayan revealed that the original concept was intended as a series. However, he encountered resistance from stakeholders who viewed it as a risky venture. Undeterred, Afolayan and his team set out to prove their capabilities by delivering a compelling film that showcased their storytelling prowess. With the success of the film, they were able to convince decision-makers of their vision for the series.

On March 1, 2024, Netflix unveiled ‘Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre,’ a sequel to the 2022 film, marking the continuation of Afolayan’s captivating saga. For the acclaimed director, the ‘Aníkúlápó’ story holds personal significance, driven by his unwavering passion for portraying authentic African narratives onscreen.
