Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, had the honour of being a distinguished guest at the Buganu festival hosted by King Mswati III of Eswatini. The festival, an integral part of the southern African kingdom’s cultural heritage, commemorates the bountiful Marula fruit harvest and stands as one of its grandest annual events.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of a large royal arena, the Buganu festival captivated spectators with its vibrant display of Swazi traditions and customs. Over 30,000 women leaders, known as “Lushango,” graced the event, embodying the essence of Swazi culture as torchbearers who pass down traditional knowledge and practices to younger generations.

In the presence of King Mswati III and the revered Queen Mother Ntfombi Tfwala, Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey adorned the celebratory bare-shoulder “Lihiya” attire, symbolizing her deep respect and admiration for Swazi heritage. Seated alongside the royal dignitaries, Botchwey immersed herself in the rich tapestry of Eswatini’s cultural festivities.
During the event, King Mswati III engaged in bilateral discussions with Minister Botchwey, underscoring the significance of diplomatic ties between Ghana and Eswatini. The esteemed monarch also extended his hospitality by hosting a banquet for Botchwey and other dignitaries at his palace in Hlane.
The Minister also conveyed a special message from Ghanaian President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
