Kawhi Leonard has announced his withdrawal from this summer’s Olympic Games, dealing a setback to Team USA’s quest for gold in Paris.

The decision comes amid concerns over Leonard’s ongoing recovery from a right knee issue that sidelined him during the NBA playoffs.
Despite showing signs of progress, Leonard opted to prioritize his health and readiness for the upcoming NBA season with the Clippers.
Replacing Leonard on the Olympic roster is Celtics guard Derrick White, according to recent reports. This adjustment reshapes Team USA’s lineup as they prepare to defend their Olympic title in France.
“We respect Kawhi’s decision to focus on his recovery,” stated Team USA officials in response to Leonard’s withdrawal.
The men’s basketball tournament in Paris is set to commence on July 27, where Team USA, boasting a star-studded roster, will face formidable opponents including Serbia, South Sudan, and Puerto Rico in the group stage.

A statement read: ‘Kawhi has been ramping up for the Olympics over the past several weeks and had a few strong practices in Las Vegas. He felt ready to compete.
‘However, he respects that USA Basketball and the Clippers determined it’s in his best interest to spend the remainder of the summer preparing for the upcoming season rather than participating in the Olympic Games in Paris.’
The two-time National Basketball Association champion averaged 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 68 regular season games for the Clippers during the 2023-24 campaign.
It marked the first time the Leonard reached the 60-game mark in a season since the 2018-19 campaign he spent with the Toronto Raptors.
