Nollywood veteran Kanayo O. Kanayo recently sparked a discussion on gender dynamics in the entertainment industry, describing men as an “endangered species.” His comments came during an appearance on the podcast “The Honest Bunch,” co-hosted by Husband Material and Deity Cole.

Kanayo expressed his frustration over the financial support wealthy Nigerian men provide to female actors, which he believes creates an unfair perception that male actors are not as hardworking.

“Many wealthy Nigerian men patronize our women and give them benefits that make us look like we are not working hard,” he lamented.

He elaborated on how this trend impacts male actors, stating, “Nigerian rich men, most of them spend money on our girls to the extent that it impoverishes us. You call a girl, she’s your girlfriend, she says she wants to do a production and demands N100 million to N150 million and you give her. But if it’s me, KOK, you’ll say ‘go and work hard, my friend.’”

Kanayo highlighted a disparity in the type of financial support men and women receive in the industry, particularly in times of need.

“Let’s look into this issue because have you seen any lady ask for financial help for any medical expenses? It’s only the men. We are an endangered species, that’s what I am saying,” he stated.

Despite his concerns, Kanayo remains committed to his craft and expressed his ambition to stay active in Nollywood until he reaches the age of 90.

The veteran actor also voiced worries about the growing number of what he considers “untalented women” entering the Nollywood scene.
