The bill is part of the government’s efforts to regulate and maintain the free SHS policy amid concerns that it might be scrapped by future administrations.

Prof. Alabi, who leads the NDC’s flagbearer campaign, spoke to Citi News in Accra on Thursday, emphasizing the need for regular updates to the program for better results.

He clarified that they are not against Free SHS but believe its current management could be improved. He stressed that policies should allow for development and not be rigid.
He suggested that there should be room for periodic reviews to ensure growth and advancement. While he’s unsure of the bill’s final form, he believes caution is necessary.
On the other hand, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin defended the government’s decision, highlighting that citizens could sue any future government that fails to uphold it.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Tuesday, June 10, he explained that once it becomes law, it’s obligatory for governments to implement unless it’s amended.
He also mentioned that the Education Minister would present the Free SHS Bill to Parliament and discussed how certain constitutional aspirations become enforceable through such legislation.
