John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a heartfelt plea to multinational corporations, urging them not to withdraw their operations from the Ghanaian market. This appeal comes at a critical juncture where several multinational firms have considered relocating due to economic difficulties.

The economic landscape of Ghana, spanning from 2022 to the present, has prompted numerous multinational companies to contemplate shifting their business activities to other countries. The recent departure of Glovo, a prominent food delivery giant in Africa, serves as an example. The Spanish firm announced its decision to exit the Ghanaian market on May 10, 2024, citing profitability challenges and a reassessment of investment priorities.

Speaking at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra on Monday, May 27, Mahama expressed deep concern over the potential repercussions of multinational companies exiting Ghana. The former President emphasized that such departures could have adverse effects on job creation, tax revenue generation, and overall economic growth.
“Amidst all the companies leaving, our public debts have soared to a staggering 658.6 billion cedis. But we cannot succumb to despair over the poor quality of governance that has characterized the past seven and a half years,” Mahama stated.
In an appeal to industry leaders, Mahama implored them to reconsider their decisions and remain committed to Ghana. “I use this opportunity to appeal to you, captains of the industry, to stay a little longer. Please don’t abandon our country. There is a saying that the darkest hour is before the dawn,” he pleaded.
