John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared his backing for legislative efforts aimed at improving education in Ghana, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) Bill.

Speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Sunday, July 7, Mahama expressed his support for any bill that enhances education quality and sustainability for Ghanaian children.
However, he stressed the importance of thorough stakeholder consultation before finalizing such legislation.
“I support any bill that will improve our education, ensuring sustainability and quality education for our children. Any bill that aims to achieve this is something I will support,” Mahama affirmed.

Regarding the Free SHS Bill specifically, Mahama highlighted the need for the bill to undergo proper scrutiny and consultation among stakeholders.
“I haven’t seen the bill yet, and I believe it hasn’t been subjected to stakeholder consultation. We need to review the bill. Once approved by Cabinet, it should be presented in parliament and referred to the appropriate committee,” he explained.
Mahama emphasized the importance of involving parents, teachers, and all stakeholders in the educational sector when making significant changes. “If we are making fundamental changes to our educational system, everyone with a stake in education must be involved,” he added.
