The NHL Alumni paid tribute to Kowal following the news of his death in a statement on Twitter which reads:
The NHL Alumni Association is saddened to learn that Joe Kowal has passed away at the age of 67.

Joe was drafted to the Buffalo Sabres in the 1976 NHL Draft. He played in 22 games for the Sabres, scoring 5 points over 2 seasons.
His hockey career continued 4 more seasons playing in the AHL.
We send our deepest condolences to Joe’s family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time.
Born on February 3, 1956, in Toronto, Ontario, Kowal was drafted in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Sabres in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft.
He went on to play 22 games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres between 1976 and 1978.
The rest of his career, which lasted from 1976 to 1981, was spent in the minor American Hockey League.
