Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, the father of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant, has passed away at the age of 69. His alma mater, La Salle University, confirmed his death on Tuesday, July 16, 2024

Bryant, a former NBA player and coach, recently suffered a massive stroke, according to reports.

He spent eight seasons in the NBA, playing for the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, and Houston Rockets. He averaged 8.7 points per game over 606 career games.

La Salle University remembered Bryant as a beloved figure, having played for the Explorers from 1973 to 1975 and served on their coaching staff from 1993 to 1996.

Joe Bryant’s professional career extended beyond the NBA, with stints in France, Italy, Japan, and Thailand. His time in Italy was significant in shaping his son Kobe’s love for basketball.

Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others tragically died in a helicopter crash in January 2020. Despite some strained moments, Joe and his wife Pam were present at Kobe’s memorial service.

Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, expressed her condolences on Instagram, highlighting the positive moments they shared despite the limited time together.

Detroit Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem, a former agent for Kobe Bryant, also paid tribute, remembering Joe Bryant as a devoted family man and a key figure in his professional journey.
