Joe Giella (June 27, 1928 – March 21, 2023) was an American comic book illustrator best known for his work as a DC Comics inker during the Silver Age of Comic Books, which historians and fans refer to as the late 1950s and early 1960s. Giella has been referred to be “one of the creators identified with the Silver Age of Comics” due to his extensive and productive career.

Born on June 27, 1928, Giella grew up in the Astoria area of Queens, and attended the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan. Together with future comics experts Mike Sekowsky and Joe Kubert, he also studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and took commercial art classes at Hunter College.

Unfortunately, there is no information available regarding Joseph Giella’s children. Nevertheless, we’ll update this if we find out more. Giella inked Westerns penciled by Alex Toth (including the feature “Sierra Smith”) and Gene Colan during the superhero lull in the early 1950s (on the series Hopalong Cassidy, splitting the work with fellow inker Sy Barry).
