Born in 1943, Lott was educated at E.O. Smith Elementary School and Kashmere Gardens High School. In 1957, at the age of 14, he sold his first artwork, a painting — a sale that marked the beginning of his professional art career.
Lott’s mentor was Muralist John Biggers and on Biggers’ recommendation, he (Lott) enrolled in the historically black college Hampton Institute. He studied there from 1963 and 1964. From Virginia, he moved across the country to California State University (1965) and then to Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles.
Lott was extremely skilled at painting and drawing, and soon honed his gift, turning trash into treasure and combining it with the spirit of activism.

Relics of the Future, Lott’s first substantial solo exhibition, took place in the summer of 1977 at Robinson Galleries. The exhibition featured 40 pieces, including 14 sculptures, 5 paintings, and a 30-minute videotape by Andy Mann documenting the initial installation and opening. The gallery also published a 19-page catalog to accompany the exhibition.

Lott’s 9-foot-tall, 200-pound figurative wire and rebar sculpture Zoroastera: Fire Spitter was included in Fire, a show curated by James Surls for the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in 1979.
Lott pushed for the El Piatero Method, which is inexpensive.
Lott employed the El Piatero Technique, which is comparable to piata creation in that layers of papier mâché are put over frameworks (often in conjunction with discarded, repurposed objects) to create human, animal, and other figures.
Lott was also instrumental in the establishment of Project Row Homes (PRH), a major urban restoration initiative in Houston’s Third Ward.
Lott received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Arts from the Art League Houston in 2016.
Lott is the subject of a 2017 28-minute documentary titled Jesse Lott: Art & Activism. The 14 Pews Film Academy students shot the short, which was directed and edited by 14 Pews founder Cressandra Thibodeaux. Several national prizes have been bestowed on the video, including Best Short Documentary at both the International Black Film Festival and the Tulsa American Film Festival.
Lott was extremely private about his personal life. He is thought to have had at least two children.
