Born on April 9, 1931, Jerry Hilgenberg’s journey in football began in the small town of Wilton, Iowa. He attended Wilton Junction High School, where the absence of a football program didn’t deter him from making a lasting impact.

Despite playing just one season as a high school running back, Hilgenberg’s contributions were so significant that he earned a well-deserved induction into the Iowa High School Football Players Hall of Fame.

In 1950, Hilgenberg walked on to Leonard Raffensperger’s Iowa football team as a quarterback. However, his versatility and prowess on the field led to a quick transition to the center and linebacker positions. This marked the beginning of a remarkable football career that would see him become an integral part of the University of Iowa’s football legacy.

While Hilgenberg was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 1954 NFL Draft, his professional playing career was deferred as he was also drafted by the U.S. Air Force. Following his service, he returned to his alma mater, where he assumed the role of a Hawkeye assistant football coach for eight seasons, from 1956 to 1963.

Former Hawkeye quarterback Mike Cilek, reflecting on a 50-year friendship with Hilgenberg, remembered him as a mentor, partner, and good friend. Their shared experiences in the real estate business not only showcased Hilgenberg’s acumen but also his commitment to doing business the right way. Cilek emphasized that Hilgenberg’s teachings from athletics could be carried on for an entire lifetime.

Jerry Hilgenberg’s impact on the University of Iowa was further immortalized when he was inducted into the Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1995. Additionally, he received recognition as a member of various all-time Hawkeye teams, including the prestigious Iowa’s All-Century Team in 1989.

As we bid farewell to Jerry Hilgenberg, the Hawkeye community honors a man whose contributions to the sport and the university will forever be cherished. His legacy lives on in the memories of fans, colleagues, and those who had the privilege of knowing a true Hawkeye legend.
