Early Life and Education

Born in Hammersmith, London, Rees-Mogg was educated at Westminster Under School, Eton College, and the University of Oxford. At Oxford, he read history as an undergraduate at Trinity College and served as president of the Oxford University Conservative Association.

Professional Career

Before entering politics, Rees-Mogg worked in the City of London and in Hong Kong for Lloyd George Management. In 2007, he co-founded the hedge fund management firm Somerset Capital Management LLP, through which he amassed a substantial fortune. By 2016, his wealth was estimated to be between £55 million and £150 million, including his wife’s expected inheritance.

Political Career

Early Attempts and Election as MP

Rees-Mogg initially contested the 1997 and 2001 general elections unsuccessfully. However, he was elected as the MP for North East Somerset in 2010. He was re-elected in 2015 and 2017 with increasing vote shares, though his vote share slightly decreased in the 2019 election.

Positions Held

Chairman of the European Research Group (2018-2019): Rees-Mogg chaired this Eurosceptic group, gaining prominence for his opposition to the Chequers Agreement and Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit withdrawal agreement.
