His philanthropic efforts and contributions to developing medical resources in Charlotte, however, remained his most lasting impact.

Levine was a substantial donor to the Atrium Health Foundation, beginning with a gift to assist the Children’s Medical Network in 1987. He continued to support pediatric health, donating $10 million in 2003 to create the Levine Children’s Hospital.

In 2010, his efforts to build the Levine Cancer Institute resulted in a $20 million gift. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Mindy Ellen Levine Behavioral Health Center in Davidson in 2014.

The Leon Levine Foundation gave the Carolinas HealthCare System $25 million in 2016, which was utilized to expand the Levine Cancer Institute. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it if it hadn’t been for my career at Family Dollar,” Levine said of the opportunity to contribute.

“I enjoy both of my jobs.” The Leon Levine Opportunity Center, a 160,000-square-foot facility named in his honor and established by Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont in 2015 with a $1.2 million grant from the Leon Levine Foundation, bears Levine’s name.
