When MacPherson was sixteen years old, he was noticed while taking part in the Kurnell triathlon in southern Sydney. In 2009, MacPherson participated in the Hawaiian Ironman and completed the race in 10 hours and 32 minutes. In 2013 and 2014, Macpherson qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships twice.
