The rugby union in Zimbabwe was overseen by Ian McIntosh. From 1993 to 1994, he led the Springboks as their head coach. He never represented his country on the rugby field, but in the 1970s, Ray Williams, who was managing him at the time, helped him manage the rugby union team in Wales.

He was popularly referred to as the “Godfather” of Sharks rugby during his tenure in Natal, and the team named the Kings Park Stadium entrance gate after him.

During 1993 and 1994, he was the Springboks’ head coach, overseeing 12 Test matches with a record of four victories, two ties, and six defeats. He resigned from his job after the Springboks lost a 2-0 series to the All Blacks.
