Ghanaian actor Big Akwes has voiced his disappointment in President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, citing unfulfilled promises to the movie industry despite his financial support during the 2016 election campaign.

In a recent interview on the United Showbiz programme with MzGee, Big Akwes recounted his decision to financially support Akufo-Addo’s campaign, driven by promises to address the industry’s concerns.
He clarified that while he didn’t actively campaign like other actors, his contribution was intended to bolster Akufo-Addo’s bid for presidency based on assurances of support for filmmakers.
“We trusted his words promising to assist us. He convinced us to believe in him, saying, ‘Ignore Mahama, trust me, and I will support you. At my age, I won’t misuse funds,’” Big Akwes recounted in Twi during the interview.

However, according to the actor, these assurances have not materialized since Akufo-Addo took office. Promises such as establishing a film village, constructing theaters, and providing incentives for producers have reportedly gone unfulfilled.
Big Akwes also criticized the distribution of funds within the industry, alleging bias towards individuals aligned with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We feel deceived by his fondness for money and neglect of our grievances. Our complaints have fallen on deaf ears,” he expressed, echoing sentiments shared by fellow industry figures Christiana Awuni and Mr. Beautiful.
The disappointment expressed by Big Akwes reflects broader frustrations within Ghana’s creative arts community over unmet expectations and perceived unfair treatment under the Akufo-Addo administration.
