In a statement released after the verdict, Hunter Biden said, “I am disappointed by the outcome, but grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community.” His words reflect the emotional toll of the trial and the significant backing he received from his loved ones.

Throughout the trial, several members of the Biden family were present to support Hunter. However, only two were in court for the sentencing: his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, and his uncle, James Biden, who is also the brother of President Joe Biden. Notably, U.S. First Lady Jill Biden arrived at the courthouse just minutes after the verdict was announced and left with her stepson, navigating through a throng of photographers and journalists.

Legal experts suggest that Hunter Biden could face prison time as a result of his conviction, although it is highly unlikely that he will receive the maximum sentence of 25 years. The judge has not yet set a date for sentencing but indicated that it would typically occur within 120 days of the conviction.

Hunter Biden’s defence attorney, Abbe Lowell, has vowed to “vigorously pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter,” signalling a potentially lengthy appeals process. The defence maintains that the case was complicated by Hunter Biden’s struggles with addiction.

Special counsel David Weiss, however, emphasized that the case centred on illegal actions taken by Hunter Biden, irrespective of his addiction. “The case was not about addiction, but about the illegal choices the defendant made while in the throes of addiction,” Weiss said.
