Hungary’s Barnabas Varga Stable After Collision with Scotland Goalkeeper

In a crucial Euro 2024 match, Hungary’s forward, Barnabas Varga, suffered serious facial fractures during a collision with Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn.

The incident occurred in the second half when Gunn punched away a free-kick, leaving Varga motionless on the pitch. Immediate concern from teammates led to urgent medical attention, but the delay in bringing a stretcher visibly frustrated Hungary’s captain, Dominik Szoboszlai.

Varga was rushed to a Stuttgart hospital, where he is set to undergo surgery for his injuries. The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed that several bones in Varga’s face were broken, and he also suffered a concussion.

Scotland’s goalkeeper, Gunn, expressed regret, recalling the collision as a blur and hoping Varga would be all right. Despite the interruption, the match resumed, and Hungary secured a 1-0 victory with a last-minute goal by Kevin Csoboth.

The win keeps Hungary in third place in Group A, giving them a chance to advance as one of the best third-placed teams. Unfortunately, Scotland finished at the bottom, exiting the tournament in the group stage once again12.
