Born in 2003, she is one of six siblings: Shyenne, Evionn, Noah, Lucky, and Jonah. Her mother, Yeev Thoj, met John Lee when Suni was two years old, and Suni considers him a father figure.
Shyenne and Evionn traveled to Paris to cheer for Suni at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they witnessed her win gold in the women’s gymnastics team final. Shyenne expressed her pride on Instagram, calling Suni “unreal” and stating how proud she was of her sister.
Suni and her siblings were raised near St. Paul, Minnesota, in a community with a significant Hmong population.

Her parents, who shared their Hmong heritage in a 2021 interview, had planned to take Suni and Shyenne to Laos after the Tokyo Olympics. However, the trip was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shyenne has been a constant support for Suni, especially when the Tokyo Olympic Games were postponed. Although she couldn’t be in Tokyo, she celebrated Suni’s all-around gymnastics win from afar and later attended the Sports Illustrated awards with her, where Suni won “Female Athlete of the Year.”
Shyenne, a dancer, also helped choreograph Suni’s floor routine for the Tokyo Olympics.
Suni’s family has appeared on TV with her, marking their first reunion since she returned from Tokyo. Their unity and support have been instrumental in her journey as an Olympic champion.
