At the age of 85, Leon Levine, the creator of the Family Dollar retail business, passed away. In 1959, Levine founded the first Family Dollar store, which eventually grew to more than 8,000 locations across the country.

His biggest contributions to Charlotte’s medical advancement and philanthropy, however, will always be remembered.
Levine was a significant donor to the Atrium Health Foundation, beginning his support of the Children’s Medical Network in 1987.
The Mindy Ellen Levine Behavioral Health Center in Davidson was founded with his assistance in 2014.

The Carolinas HealthCare System received a $25 million donation from the Leon Levine Foundation in 2016 that was utilized to build out the Levine Cancer Institute. Levine said, “If it weren’t for my employment at Family Dollar, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to participate.

I truly love both of my jobs. The Leon Levine Opportunity Center, a 160,000-square-foot campus named in Levine’s honor, was established by Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont in 2015 with a $1.2 million grant from the Leon Levine Foundation. Levine’s name may be found all throughout Charlotte.
